The people who look after your car

Six of us run Pitstop 66 from a hall in Stalybridge, in the heart of Greater Manchester. Two founded it. One takes every arriving car through the intake. Two keep the workshop going. One keeps the place to the standard owners expect to walk into.

We are all car people. That is not a line for a website — it is why there is a clubhouse, and why there is a 1970s Land Rover parked in it.

Elliot

Vehicle care
Takes every arriving car through the eight-stage intake himself. Nissan GT-R man, so he is not easily impressed, which is useful.

More than thirty years working alongside Sam. Between them there is very little on a car they have not seen before.

Site and facilities
Keeps the building running, and built the clubhouse himself. Arrives on a Piaggio.

Site standards
Keeps the hall in the condition owners expect to walk into. Drives an Aygo, and is not remotely apologetic about it.

The clubhouse

Steve built it. Sam’s Series 3 sits in it. It is where owners tend to end up when they come to drop a car off and stay rather longer than they meant to.

No other storage facility near Manchester has one, as far as we know. It exists because we wanted somewhere to sit with the cars, and it turns out owners want that too.

What happens when a car arrives

Elliot takes every car through the same eight stages, whether it is a Ferrari or a Fiesta:

  1. Condition photographed
  2. Keys and vehicle ID tagged
  3. Interior protected
  4. Washed thoroughly
  5. Tyre pressures raised to prevent flat spots
  6. Left to air dry completely
  7. Battery and fluids checked
  8. Brake discs cleaned

Then it goes into the hall, and someone lays eyes on it every day it is with us.

The hall itself

In the dehumidified area, humidity is held at 55% relative humidity and measured rather than assumed. Above 60% steel begins to corrode. Below 45% leather and rubber dry out and crack. Fifty-five sits in the middle of that, which is the whole point of the number.

The building is gated, alarmed and under CCTV around the clock. Access is by arrangement with 24 hours’ notice, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.

Collection and delivery runs to 65 miles from Stalybridge at no extra charge — that reaches Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and the whole of Cheshire. Storage starts at £150 a month including VAT, with a one month minimum.
