Why 55% Relative Humidity

Fifty-five per cent relative humidity is the number. Above roughly 60% RH, steel can corrode and chrome can pit; below about 40%, leather, wood veneer and old rubber can dry out and crack. Between the two, a car can stand for years without the slow damage that a damp garage does in one winter. Our dehumidified bays hold the air at 55% RH with dehumidifiers, and the reading is taken in the dehumidified area itself and logged on the daily check, so it is a measured figure, not an estimate.

This is the tier with humidity control. Our secure indoor car storage at £150 a month is dry and monitored, which suits most modern cars; the £200 dehumidified tier is for cars where the air is the whole point. Same bay, same daily check, same security, managed air.

Dehumidified vs “Climate Controlled”: What the Words Mean

Classic supercars covers with protective cover in car storage

Humidity, not temperature

We manage the moisture in the air, not the temperature. A stored car is damaged by damp, not by cold; a dry car at 5°C is fine, a wet one at 15°C is not.

What a heater does

Warm air holds more water, so a heater lowers the reading while it runs. Switch it off and the moisture is still in the room, condensing on the coldest metal in the building: the car.

What a dehumidifier does

It takes water out of the air and drains it away. The reading stays at 55% RH day and night, in October as in June, whatever the weather is doing outside.

Ask any facility for the number

Most places describing themselves as climate controlled are describing a heater on a thermostat. The test is simple: what is the humidity held at, and where is the meter?

How we measure and log it

The reading is taken in the dehumidified area itself and logged on the daily walk-round, so there is a record for every day the car is here.

The other tier, in one line

Secure indoor storage at £150 is the same building with the humidity monitored rather than controlled. Dry, checked daily, right for most modern cars.

Which Cars Need the Dehumidified Tier

Classics and anything with chrome or brightwork. Leather, wood and cloth interiors. Convertibles, whose hoods and seals hold moisture. Cars with older wiring, where damp finds the connectors. And any car, whatever it is, that is staying six months or more, because the damage from moisture is cumulative and mostly invisible until it is expensive. If the car would be worth less after a damp winter, it belongs here. The two tiers are below; you can move a car between them at any time.

What Damp Does to a Stored Car

Damp is the real enemy of a stored car, and it does not need a leak. A vehicle standing still in an unheated space in the North West sits in air that is 85–95% humidity for most of the winter. Condensation forms on cold metal overnight, dries by lunchtime and forms again the next night, and every cycle leaves something behind. Our guide to what six months in a damp garage does to a car goes through the bill.

Chrome, brightwork and bare metal

Pitting on chrome starts as a haze and ends as a re-plating bill. Brake discs, exhaust systems and any bare steel under the car corrode first; unseen seams and box sections corrode slowest and cost most.

Leather, wood and cloth

Leather absorbs moisture, then mildews or, if it is dried out too fast, cracks. Veneer lifts. Cloth headlinings sag as damp gets into the adhesive. Held at 55% RH, none of it moves.

Electrics and old wiring

Moisture finds connectors and earth points, and the faults appear months later as intermittent gremlins nobody can trace. Older cars and supercars with complex electronics both suffer.

Humidity-Controlled Storage for Cheshire and Lancashire Owners

Most of the classics and collector cars we store come from outside Greater Manchester: Cheshire barns and outbuildings that look the part and are damp from October to April, Lancashire garages on the wrong side of the Pennine weather, and unheated coach houses in the Peak District. Stalybridge is on the eastern edge of Greater Manchester, ten minutes from the M60 and under an hour from most of Cheshire, and we collect within 65 miles by arrangement if you would rather the car did not do the miles.

See our pages for car storage in Cheshire, Stockport, Altrincham, Bolton, Bury and Leeds for drive times and routes.

What Happens When the Car Arrives

The same eight steps as every car we store: condition photographed, hand washed and air-dried, tyres set to storage pressure, battery checked, brake discs cleaned, interior protected, ID tagged and logged, then bayed. On this tier the bay is in the dehumidified area, and the humidity reading joins the daily check from day one. The full process is on our secure indoor car storage page.

Before a classic comes in, the two things that matter most are a thorough wash to remove road salt and a look at the fuel: our classic car storage guide covers both, and whether to use a breathable cover (yes, never plastic).

Dehumidified Car Storage: Questions

Is the dehumidified area heated?

No. We control humidity, not temperature. Heating a space lowers the relative humidity while the heater runs and puts it straight back when it stops; dehumidifiers remove the moisture from the air, which is what protects the car.

Is it the same as a Carcoon or a storage bubble?

No. A bubble dehumidifies the air inside a sealed envelope around one car. Here the whole storage area is dehumidified and logged, the car sits in an open bay under a breathable cover if you take the add-on, and it can be checked and accessed without unzipping anything.

Can I move a car between tiers?

Yes. Tell us and we re-bay it. Owners often start a car on the secure indoor tier for a short stay and move it to the dehumidified area when the stay turns into a year.

Is dehumidified car storage worth it?

For a classic, a convertible, anything with chrome or a leather interior, or any car staying six months or more, yes: the difference is the corrosion and cracking that does not happen. For a modern car staying a couple of months, the secure indoor tier at £150 is usually enough.

What humidity should a car be stored at?

Around 50–55% relative humidity. Corrosion accelerates above roughly 60%; leather, wood and rubber can dry out below about 40%. We hold the dehumidified area at 55% RH and log the reading daily.

Do you control temperature?

No, and we do not describe the facility as climate controlled. Temperature swings matter far less to a stored car than moisture does; the hall is enclosed and dry, and the air in the dehumidified area is held at 55% RH.

What is the minimum stay?

One month, with no maximum and no long tie-in. £200 a month including VAT.

Is the car insured while it is with you?

Cover is arranged by the owner: the car stays on your own policy, and many insurers offer reduced laid-up cover for a car in secure storage. We provide documentation of the building security for your insurer on request.
