Two car storage solutions from one car storage company
Pitstop 66 is a car storage company in Stalybridge, Tameside, with two car storage solutions: secure indoor storage from £150 a month and dehumidified storage, with the air held at 55% relative humidity, from £200 a month, both including VAT. Every car goes through the 8-step pre-storage process on arrival and gets a daily visual check while it is here. We can collect a car from anywhere in the UK; it is a charged service, quoted by route.
All car storage here is indoors, in a gated building ten minutes from the M60. The minimum term is one month, then notice.
Car storage solutions compared
Four car storage solutions cover almost every car, and they differ more in what happens to the car than in price. Which one suits depends on what the car is worth, how long it is going away and whether anyone will look at it while it sits.
| Solution | What the car gets | Who checks it | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outdoor compound | A space in a fenced yard; the car stays out in rain, frost and sun | You, when you visit | A modern car for a few weeks |
| Self-storage unit or lock-up | A locked, dry space and your own key; usually no power or ventilation | You, when you visit | An everyday car you can check every week or two |
| Secure indoor storage | An indoor bay in a gated building, the 8-step pre-storage process and a daily visual check | Our team, every day | Modern cars and synthetic interiors, for stays of up to about three months |
| Dehumidified storage | Everything in secure indoor storage, with the air held at 55% RH | Our team, every day | Classics, leather and wood, original paint and chrome, and stays of a season or more |
A unit keeps the rain off but not the damp: steel roofs and doors lose heat at night, condensation forms on the coldest surfaces, and the car is one of them. Our guide to vehicle storage solutions scores five options on cost, protection and access.
What our car storage services include
Both tiers get the same service; the tier changes the air, not the care. What is included, what is an add-on and what is a separate service:
| Included on both tiers | Add-ons, charged on top | Separate services, charged |
|---|---|---|
| The 8-step pre-storage process, with a hand wash and dry on arrival | Battery conditioning | Collection and delivery from anywhere |
| A daily visual check | A breathable car cover | Valeting and detailing |
| Gated site, 24/7 CCTV and a monitored alarm | Servicing and repairs, arranged for you | |
| Access by arrangement, with 24 hours’ notice |
A car’s alarm and control modules draw current all the time, so a battery left alone for months goes flat; a battery conditioner or trickle charger keeps it topped up. A breathable cover keeps dust off the lacquer while letting moisture escape. We never put plastic on a car, because plastic traps moisture against the paint.

Secure indoor or dehumidified: which tier?
Dehumidified for a classic, anything with leather, wood or original paint, or any stay longer than about three months. Secure indoor storage suits a modern car on a shorter stay.
Dehumidified car storage holds 55% because it sits in the middle of a safe band. Above 60% steel can corrode, and below 45% leather and rubber can deteriorate.
Designed for owners who want secure, dedicated indoor storage for their vehicle.

What happens to a car on the day it arrives
It goes through the 8-step pre-storage process before it is parked. The steps are the same for a hatchback and a Ferrari:
- Condition photographed: every panel recorded, so a mark found later is a fact rather than an opinion.
- Hand wash and dry: road salt, brake dust and traffic film keep working on paint and brightwork for as long as they sit there.
- Tyres inflated: the same patch of each tyre carries the car’s weight for months, and higher pressure guards against flat-spotting.
- Battery check: battery and fluid levels checked before the car is parked.
- Brakes cleaned: stops corrosion seizing the brakes, the usual cause of a seized handbrake after a lay-up.
- Interior protected: protective covers over the steering wheel and seats.
- ID tagged and logged: every car and its keys indexed for quick collection.
- Air-dried: fully dried before it is parked, because a car put away damp stays damp.
Who uses our car storage services?
Owners with a car they cannot keep at home, cannot use for a while, or will not leave outside. The cars we see most:
- A Porsche 911 or Jaguar F-Type laid up from November to March and collected for spring.
- A classic MG, Triumph or Jaguar E-Type on the dehumidified tier, where damp and mould would cost more than the storage.
- A Range Rover or Mercedes stored while the owner works abroad for a year, declared SORN with DVLA.
- A Ferrari, McLaren or Aston Martin driven a few hundred miles a year and kept out of the weather and off the street.
- A car between house moves, or one inherited while probate runs.
- A restoration project waiting for space at the restorer’s, kept dry so the work done so far does not go backwards.
How to compare car storage companies
Ask each one for figures, not adjectives. Five answers separate vehicle storage companies quickly, and they work for any car storage service:
- What humidity do you hold, and on which price? A figure, and the tier it applies to.
- Who looks at the car, and how often? Daily is the answer to look for.
- What is included, and what is an add-on? Get the list in writing.
- What are the access hours and the notice period? Ours are 08:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday, with 24 hours’ notice.
- What is the minimum term, and does the price include VAT? Ours is one month, and every price here includes VAT.
The best car storage for your car is the one whose answers you can check. For the full list, see our twelve questions to ask any car storage facility.
Collection from anywhere in the UK
Our car storage services cover the whole UK: we can collect a car from anywhere and bring it to Stalybridge. It is a charged service and we keep the charge as low as we can; call 0161 464 7494 with the route and we will quote it.
Collection also solves the SORN problem. A car declared SORN can only be driven on a public road to or from a pre-booked MOT, as GOV.UK sets out, so it cannot be driven to us.
Most owners bring cars from across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and the North West. See car storage in Manchester for the wider area, or car storage in Stalybridge for the facility itself, at SK15 1PZ.
