Who we are
Six people run Pitstop 66 from a hall in Stalybridge, on the eastern edge of Greater Manchester. Sam and Darrel founded it. Elliot takes every arriving car through the intake. Sam and Damian run the workshop, thirty years into working together. Steve keeps the building going and built the clubhouse. Marina keeps the place to the standard owners expect to walk into.
You can meet all six on the about page. It matters because when you ring, you get one of six people who know which car is yours.
What the building actually does
The dehumidified area is held at 55% relative humidity and measured continuously. That number is the whole point of the building. Above roughly 60%, moisture condenses on cold metal and works on brake discs, sills, chassis rails and fasteners. Below about 45%, leather dries and cracks, rubber seals harden and timber splits. Fifty-five sits between the two.
Beyond the air: gated access, monitored alarm, 24/7 CCTV, and a person physically looking at every car every day it is here. The daily check is the part that most facilities do not do and the part that catches a soft tyre or a coolant weep in a week rather than in April.
The eight stages every car goes through
Whatever the car is worth, the intake is identical:
- Condition photographed, and you get the record
- Keys and vehicle ID tagged
- Interior protected
- Washed thoroughly, salt and traffic film keep working on paint for as long as they are left there
- Tyre pressures raised above road pressure to prevent flat spots
- Left to air dry completely, because a car put away damp stays damp
- Battery and fluid levels checked
- Brake discs cleaned
What it costs, and how the car gets here
Secure indoor storage is £150 a month for the first three months, then £165. Humidity-managed storage is £200, then £225. Both include VAT and the minimum stay is one month, with no long tie-in.
We can collect and deliver from anywhere. It is a charged service, kept as low as we can. That covers all of Greater Manchester and Cheshire and reaches Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool, so most owners never drive to us at all.
And there is a clubhouse. Steve built it, Sam’s Land Rover Series 3 sits in it, and owners are welcome in it. As far as we know no other storage facility near Manchester has one.
Why we built it this way
Between us we have had most of the bad storage experiences on offer. A barn with a leaking roof. A self-storage unit with no power and a five o’clock gate. A building advertised as climate controlled that turned out to be a fan heater on a timer. A car handed back flat, with a bill for jump-starting it.
So the building exists to fix specific complaints rather than to hit a price point. The humidity is managed because damp is what actually damages cars. Someone walks the floor daily because a camera does not notice a soft tyre. The intake runs to eight stages because skipping any of them shows up months later.
What we store
Classics and vintage cars, which make up the largest share and benefit most from managed air. Supercars and prestige vehicles from across Greater Manchester and the Cheshire belt. Motorbikes, which suffer worse than cars in damp because so much of the machine is exposed metal. Seasonal convertibles that go away in October and come back in April. And a steady number of ordinary cars belonging to people working abroad.
The intake is the same for all of them. A Fiesta gets the same eight stages as a Ferrari, because the process is what protects the car, not the badge on it.
What we will not tell you
We will not say your car is insured with us. It stays on your own policy while it is here, which is how facilities of this kind operate, and it is worth knowing before comparing us with anyone claiming otherwise.
We will not put a modern hatchback going away for eight weeks on the premium tier, because it does not need it. Tell us the car and how long it is going away for and we will say which tier we would use, even when that is the cheaper one.
Come and look
The most useful thing any owner can do is walk the floor of a facility before committing. Look at the cars already in there, look at the floor, and ask what the humidity is held at and how it is measured. We would give that advice about any building, ours included.
If the answers are vague, keep looking. A facility that cannot tell you the number it holds the air at, or how often somebody physically inspects your car, is describing a garage rather than a storage service. Those questions cost nothing to ask and they separate the buildings worth using from the ones that simply have a roof.
